Zall Souq

“سوق الزل” – ”Souq ez’zall“

Zall souq, or Souq Ez’zall as known by locals, is a truely authentic market you can visit in the heart of Riyadh. The souq is over 100 years old and still to this day a destination for many saudis to buy some of their needs.

Souq ez’zall was originaly known mainly for selling traditional carpets known as Zall in Arabic, which is where the name of the market came from. Other goods such as traditional saudi menswear, Oud & perfumes and even weaponry were also sold there.

Nowadays, Zall souq is destination to buy traditional saudi leather sandals known as Zubairiah, ugal’s, Oud and Perfumes, Mishlah or Bisht (plural Bshoot), antiques and most importantly Zall (carpets). There are no hard weapons anymore, just unsharp swords made specialy for the traditional saudi sword dance (Ardha).

What makes this souq even more unique is the ”Haraj“, an open square at the end of the market, where people still do auctioning as they have traditionally done for many centuries. The only difference is that it’s now only an antique auction.

Auctioning is a tradition that has been practiced in markets in Riyadh for a long time and people can still see it, and that makes it a good opportunity to get a glimpse of the past. It is usually active in the evening on Fridays and Saturdays but sometimes also during the week.

The market has gone through several development stages in the 50‘s and 60‘s but that didn’t change it’s spirit.

⏱Time: Sat-Thu 09:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. – Fri 03:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. ( It‘s usually less active at noon and the best time to go there is Friday/Saturday evening)
